Season 2 - Episode 39 We resume our episode this week with Melinda Ferguson, who is meeting with Dr. Vines, the president of the board of trustees, for lunch... Dr. Vines: So Melinda....how have you been? Melinda: Great! I've had a few months to rest. I had a chance to do a little traveling, reading, I got to visit with my daughter Miya....my friend, Valerie....it's been a nice break. Initially I was very upset about the suspension, but once I learned to embrace it, I really took advantage of the time I had. And now I feel completely rejuvenated and ready to reassume my role as the President. I'm even more energized than ever! Dr. Vines: I'm glad to hear that, Melinda.....lots of changes have happened in the administration building.... Melinda: So I've heard.... Dr. Vines looks over Melinda's shoulder. Dr. Vines: Ahh...there he is! Melinda: Hmm? Who? Melinda turns around to see who Dr. Vines has spotted. Dr. Vines: Dr. Mwatsumi of course.....I asked him to join us..... Melinda looks flustered, but quickly tries to pull herself together before turning around. Dr. Vines stands up to wave Dr. Mwatsumi over to the table. Dr. Mwatsumi: Michael! How are you! Melinda is surprised to hear Dr. Mwatsumi refer to Dr. Vines by his first name. Dr. Vines: Dr. Mwatsumi! Glad you could join us! Please, have a seat. Dr. Mwatsumi sits down next to Melinda. He looks over at her to catch her eye. Dr. Mwatsumi: Melinda. Melinda: Yes, hello. Awkward Silence Dr. Vines: Well...um....I don't know about you two, but I'm famished. Let's order, shall we? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Over at Sheena and Natalie's apartment, the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta are meeting... Sheena: Mom, I thought you said you weren't going to make the meeting. Carsen: Yeah, I didn't think so either, but I had to free my schedule up to come and speak with you all. Sheena: Is something wrong? Carsen: Well not exactly..... Natalie: What is it, soror? Carsen: It's about the process that you're about to start. Natalie: Oh no. Is it not going to be approved? Carsen: Oh no, that's not it. That's all taken care of. It's about the line itself.......I don't care who makes the line or doesn't make the line....but Lashonda Edwards.... Laci: Who? Sheena: Mommy isn't that Soror Val's daughter? The one who was on the fake AKA line? Carsen: Yes....yes....that's her.....sorors, I need a big favor from you all....you see...I need Lashonda to be on your line..... Natalie (yelling): What? Sheena: Mom, are you kidding me! Laci: Why would you ask us to do something like this? Carsen: Ladies, please! Everyone just settle down and let's discuss this like adults. Sheena: There's nothing to discuss mom! You cannot make us pledge that girl! Natalie: Soror Davenport, we'll be the laughing stock of the entire campus! Taylor: I have to agree with the girls. Sheena: Besides, mom what would make you think she'd even be in favor of it? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Scene 1 Continued... Across campus at the restaurant, Dr. Mwatsumi, Dr. Vines, and Dr. Ferguson are finishing up their lunches... Dr. Vines: Okay, now that we're almost done, let's get down to business. Dr. Mwatsumi: Great idea, Mich....uh, Dr. Vines....I have a lot of important university business to tend to this afternoon. Life as the president is busy! Melinda looks over at Dr. Mwatsumi out of the corner of her eye in response to his comment. Dr. Vines: Uh yes, I see. Now, like I was saying......now that Melinda's suspension period is ending, I thought it would be best if we came up with a transition plan. Melinda: Great idea, Dr. Vines..... Dr. Mwatsumi: Wait, before we get to that, exactly when are you planning to return, Dr. Ferguson? Melinda: In two weeks. You know this. Dr. Mwatsumi: I guess I'm confused, because I was going through the standard of operating procedures and it clearly states that before a president can be re-instated after a period of suspension, another hearing must be held by the board of trustee's at least thirty days prior to the end of the suspension. If the hearing is not held at least thirty days prior, then an additional thirty days has to be added on to the time from when they do meet. Has this been done already? Dr. Vines: Well, no.....I have to be honest with you, I'm not aware of that rule. We've never dealt with this situation before. Dr. Mwatsumi: I figured that. Which is why I took the liberty of making copies of the policy for everyone before I got here. Dr. Mwatsumi reaches into his bag and gives both Melinda and Dr. Vines a printed handout, with the policy highlighted. Melinda reads over the handout, and then slowly looks up over her paper. Melinda: Dr. Mwatsumi, just what is the meaning of this? Dr. Mwatsumi: Why, Dr. Ferguson, I haven't the slightest idea of what you are referring to. Just trying to make sure we do things the right way....for once..... ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Over in Shakir's dorm, he is spending the evening with a girl from neighboring campus, Amgis... Gloria: So what did you invite me over for, Shakir? Shakir: What do you mean? Gloria: I mean, what did you want me to come over for? Shakir: So we could chill, kick it....get to know each other a little better....that's all.... Gloria: Oh really? And how do you propose we do that? Shakir: I have a few ideas... Shakir leans in and begins to kiss Gloria. Gloria tenses up, but after a few seconds she begins to relax and leans back onto the bed. Shakir begins to unbutton Gloria's shirt, just as someone starts knocking on his door. Shakir: Who the heck is that? Oh forget it. They'll have to come back later. The knocking gets louder and Karissa starts to yell through the door from the other side. Karissa: Shakir! Shakir! Open the door, Shakir! I know your here! And I'm not leaving until you do! Shakir looks up toward the door. Gloria: Who is that? Karissa: Shakir! Shakir! I mean it! Open up! Gloria: Shakir! What is goin' on? Shakir: Just ignore her! She'll go away. Karissa: Shakir! Do you have someone in there with you? Gloria: Is that your girlfriend? Shakir: No, No, it's this crazy girl.... Gloria: Yeah, right! Then why does she sound so pissed? Gloria jumps up and runs toward the door. She flings it open to find Karissa standing on the other side... ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Scene 2 Continued... Carsen: Ladies, please! Everyone just settle down and let's discuss this like adults. Sheena: There's nothing to discuss mom! You cannot make us pledge that girl! Carsen: Listen, sorors.....Lashonda's mother is a great friend of mine. In fact, she pledged me. And....we've been talking.....we just both agree that the best thing for Lashonda is this.... Sheena: Mom, I'm sorry, I just can't understand. Carsen: Lashonda suffered a terrible embarrassment with this whole AKA mess.... Natalie: And now we have to face a terrible embarrassment because of it? Carsen: That's not true, Natalie. No one will even make a fuss. Laci: Soror Davenport, come on. Carsen: Okay, okay fine. Maybe a first, but after awhile, things will settle down. I just think that if Lashonda could feel the love of a sisterhood that her mother, that I, and all of you have come to love so dearly.....she'd be able to recover from the way she's feeling right now. Silence Carsen: I know I've given you all a lot to think about. But I promised my friend I'd talk to you all. Please, sorors, think about it. Can you at least agree to this? Sheena: Yeah, fine. Carsen: Alright sorors, I'm have to run. We'll talk soon. And remember....discretion is key.... Carsen gets up and leaves the apartment. Natalie: Now what are we going to do cause this cannot happen! Sheena: No, it can't! And it won't happen! ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Scene 3 Continued... Gloria: Shakir! What is goin' on? Shakir: Just ignore her! She'll go away. Karissa: Shakir! Do you have someone in there with you? Gloria: Is that your girlfriend? Shakir: No, No, it's this crazy girl.... Gloria: Yeah, right! Then why does she sound so pissed? Gloria jumps up and runs toward the door. She flings it open to find Karissa standing on the other side... Karissa stops and looks Gloria up and down. Karissa: Who are you? Gloria: I'm Gloria and I'm leavin'. Karissa: Yeah, good idea. Shakir: Wait! Gloria! Wait! Gloria runs down the hall and Karissa walks in. Shakir: Karissa! What are you doin' here! Karissa: Oh Shakir, are you kiddin' me? Were you really about to have sex with that girl? Shakir: What business of it is yours? Karissa: Shakir! I'm worried about you. You can hate me all you want, but I'm concerned about your health. Don't punish me by not taking care of you! Shakir....Did you get tested yet?
